Jamie McDonnell defends his Commonwealth bantamweight title at the Hillsborough Leisure Centre on Saturday - and the layers are anticipating an easy night for the pride of Doncaster.

The 16-2 (7) McDonnell boxes experienced Kenyan Nick Otieno in South Yorkshire, and with the former no bigger than 1/8 to prevail surely nobody outside of the African's travelling party is anticipating the belt might change hands.

Otieno has been a pro since 2005 and brings a 21-6 (9) record to the table.

He has previously boxed for the IBF international title at bantamweight in Russia and in 2008 he went to the Philippines where he lost to the classy Z Gorres over 10 rounds. And while this shows he's something of a 'have gloves will travel type' his record also shows that every time he has stepped up he's been beaten.

In his last fight he showed plenty of guts to stay the course against undefeated touted Thai Thangthong Kiattaweesuk for the vacant WBC international bantamweight title. However he came up short in that one and it's hard to see him upsetting the formbook against the improving McDonnell.

The Yorkshireman also turned over in 2005 with a points win over Neal Reid at the Doncaster Dome.

A draw with Dai Davies in his fifth fight didn't curb Jamie's enthusiasm and after eight wins (plus that draw) he challenged Chris Edwards for the British super-flyweight title in 2007. He lost a split decision that night in Wigan and also lost on points to maverick talent Lee Haskins in his very next fight.

Two defeats might have made lesser fighters consider their options but McDonnell has toughed it out and won eight straight since Haskins.

He won the British and Commonwealth titles by out-foxing Ian 'Dappa' Napa over 12 in Essex and then beat Jerome Arnould for the European bantamweight crown in March of last year.

Last time out he boxed superbly to see off quality Belgian Stephane Jamoye and has been talking about world title shots in the build up to this one.

He's certainly not ready for the likes of Nonito Donaire or Vic Darchinyan just yet but at 25 he's on the march and don't be surprised to see him competing for world honours before the year is out.

To do that he'll have to get past Otieno and my gut feeling is he will.

The big-hitters will be all over the 4/9 about McDonnell winning on points given the Kenyan has never been stopped and looks genuinely durable.

However McDonnell is a tall, rangy puncher with respectable power (four stoppages in his last six fights) and therefore punters might be tempted by current 2/1 quotes from Sky Bet that Otieno takes a count in the fight.

In February of last year slick Russian Alexander Bakhtin had him over in the first round of their fight, though in Otieno's defence he did beat the count before eventually losing on points.

Ultimately I see this as a clash between two boxers whose careers are heading in different directions and provided McDonnell has made the weight correctly I see him making a statement in front of the Sky cameras.

  1. European bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell could be set for a showdown with British king Stuey Hall later this year. The 25-year-old former British champion is currently focusing on his Commonwealth title defence against Nick Otieno in Sheffield on Saturday.
