JOE CALZAGHE has backed old pal Gavin Rees to pick up the European title tomorrow night. “The Rock” takes on Andy Murray in Cardiff for the vacant lightweight belt, and former two-time world champ Calzaghe is confident his old stablemate can do the business.

“I’ve known Gavin since he was nine when my dad trained him that age, so it’s been over 20 years that I’ve been close to him, not only as a fighter but also as a friend,” said the Welshman, who retired unbeaten two years ago.

“I was over the moon for him at Prizefighter because he proved to himself and to everyone else that he could win big titles.

“He lost his world title to (Andreas) Kotelnik and I think he’d admit himself that he didn’t train as hard as he should have done for a defence of the world title. But to go into Prizefighter as a marked man in the line-up and take the title was a great achievement.”

The former WBO super middleweight king added: “It was an amazing time for a small gym in Newbridge with my dad to have three world champions – just an incredible achievement for an unfashionable little town in the Valleys.

“It was the kind of thing that will never happen again – you rarely see it in the big famous gyms, so for us to achieve it was something special – and Bradley Pryce was also Commonwealth champion and Gary Lockett was WBU Champion too, all trained by my dad.”

Calzaghe feels if Rees can get the mental side of his game right he will have too much for Murray.

“The frustrating thing with Gavin is, as long as he trains 100% and has his mind on the job, he can be world class.

“He’s come back and won the British title and he’s back in form, he can mix it with the best and who knows, he’s young enough to move into world title contention if he wins.”

Rees may be odds-on for the victory, but Murray plans to emulate his namesake and smash the Welshman. The unbeaten Irish boxer is gunning for him at the same time as Scotland’s tennis ace makes a charge in the French Open.

Rees is favourite, having been a world champion at light-welterweight.

He is fighting in Cardiff (live on Sky Sports 1) and is used to the big occasion.

But 28 year-old Murray, from Cavan, isn’t bothered about that – or sharing a name with the grumpy tennis star.

“It’s a bit of a laugh and it doesn’t cause me too much bother!” said Murray – who is aiming to extend his winning pro record to 25 fights.

“He loves his boxing so maybe one day he’ll come and see me fight – or even get in the ring with me if he fancies it – a bit of Murray on Murray sparring!”

Murray comes into the Rees fight on the back of his first full pro training camp with trainer John Breen. The location of their base in the hills of Connemara in County Galway – a secluded peninsula away from the hustle and bustle of city life – says a lot about Murray.

“It was my first proper training camp as a pro so being away from home for so long has been tough,” said Murray.

“But when I was an amateur I did it so I knew what to expect and being in the middle of nowhere has helped – there were no distractions and it’s a really peaceful place so I’ve been fully focused on my training with everything I need around me.

“Training’s been great – it’s been really tough but I’ve reaped the benefit and I’m in great shape, so I can’t wait to get in there.”

Murray holds a significant height advantage over Rees, and Irish legend Barry McGuigan believes their fight “is going to be a stunner of a clash – a fight of the year contender”.

June 4 promises to be a special night for British boxing fans as Gavin Rees takes on Andy Murray in Cardiff for the European lightweight title before Carl Froch’s Super Six semi-final against Glen Johnson in America – both on Sky Sports.

Rees and Andy Murray tussle for the vacant strap at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, with tickets on sale now for what promises to be a great night of boxing on Saturday Night Fight Night.

Then in the early hours of Sunday morning, Nottingham star Froch lays his WBC super-middleweight title on the line in Atlantic City against Jamaican Glen Johnson, with a place in the Super Six final up for grabs.

Former WBA Super-Lightweight champion Rees welcomes the unbeaten Murray onto his home turf, with Rees returning to title action after vacating his British belt earlier in the year and Murray fights for his first major title after claiming Irish and EBU-EU honours in his 24 fight unbeaten stint as a pro.

Rees and Murray will follow a high-class undercard as Wales’ former IBO and European champion Jason Cook and Cardiff’s Frankie Borg add more local flavour. From Liverpool, former British and English super-middleweight champ Tony Dodson and ex-England lightweight champ Steve Williams make the short journey to Wales, while Belfast’s Barry McGuigan prospect Carl Frampton aims to move the unbeaten start to his career into double figures – opponents for the five fighters will be announced soon.
