Ending in controversy the last time they met, the rematch of Abner Mares vs Joseph Agbeko scheduled on December 3 2011 is the much awaited rematch of the year. The last time, Abner Mares won the controversial matchup and went on to win the bantamweight title. This time fans hope that it will be a fair match and the win will decide who is better than whom.
Abner Mares who hails from Mexico, now living in Hawaiian Gardens, California won the last time because of a majority decision against Joseph Agbeko who hails from Ghana, in the first bout. The matchup turned out to be one of the most controversial fights of the year and was criticized mainly for the performance of referee Russell Mora. Calling a questionable knockdown against two time title holder Joseph Agbeko in what actually looked like a slip Mora faced a lot of criticism.
Mora was also criticized for not pulling up Abner Mares who had continuously been landing low blows throughout the fight. Mora had warned him a couple of times in the beginning of the fight but never deducted any points from him. Later on Mora did not even warn Abner Mares. In the 11th round Mora again ruled another knockdown against Joseph Agbeko even though Mares had landed another low blow. This missed call on Mora’s part changed the dynamics of the game causing Joseph Agbeko to lose the matchup.
Mora’s was deemed so shoddy that IBF had to reorganize an immediate rematch to avoid further controversies. Hence fans this time around are hoping that Joseph Agbeko will correct the mistakes he made the last time and go on to win the title in this much awaited rematch.
